Blood pressure measures the resistance of the heart as it sends blood through your arteries. Most of us know that “keeping your blood pressure under control” is highly touted as a sign of good health.

If you have blood pressure problems or ‘Hypertension’, you are right to be concerned. Getting to the cause of hypertension is important because it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage and may lead to premature death. Unfortunately, high blood pressure is treated as if it is a disease that needs medication, when in reality, high blood pressure is really a symptom that something is wrong with your circulatory system.

Traditional approaches to high blood pressure typically use diuretics, ACE inhibitors and/or beta-blockers. However research supports that people who take blood pressure lowering drugs suffer unnecessary side effects such as fatigue, headaches, dizziness, mineral deficiencies, impotence and can even increase one’s risk of heart attack. This is very unfortunate because somewhere between 50% to 80% of people diagnosed with ‘hypertension’ have mild to moderately elevated blood pressure which can be lowered without risky medications.

Remember When Your Blood Pressure Was Normal?

Do you remember a time when you did not have high blood pressure? How did your body maintain its own blood pressure without medication when it was normal?

We are born with a built-in ability to regulate our blood pressure. In a healthy body, your blood pressure is regulated by sustaining proper fluid levels, assimilating your food properly and maintaining optimal hormonal function. When these factors are compromised and compounded with life’s everyday stresses, our bodies often lose this innate ability and we end up with elevated blood pressure.

Think about it this way: Our heart - the body’s pump - has to work harder when our blood vessels become constricted and inflamed. This happens when the body can no longer eliminate excess fluid; when we have poor fat digestion that causes inflammation in the blood vessels; and when we develop an imbalance of hormones, such as cortisol and insulin, that stresses the body’s circulatory system.

Most cases of high blood pressure can be brought back to their natural state when you get to the root cause. These core causes- water imbalances, stress and poor digestion are often overlooked by traditional approaches. Once you address what’s causing your high blood pressure, you can restore your blood pressure to normal.
